The Payday is not a lender. It is an independent information and comparison service paid by affiliate commission.

Editorial Policy

People read this site because they are trying to make a difficult money decision, often quickly and often under pressure. That raises the standard for what we are allowed to publish. This policy sets out how content is produced, what we will not print, and what we do when we get something wrong.

It also says something uncomfortable but true: this site is new, and there is a great deal it has not verified yet. Where that is the case, we say so on the page instead of filling the gap with a plausible guess.

Everything here is general information, not advice

The Payday publishes explanatory guides about how cash advances and short-term lending work in Canada. Nothing on this site is financial, legal, credit or tax advice, and nothing here is tailored to your circumstances, your income, your debts or your province. We do not know your situation and we are not assessing it. If you need advice about your own position, speak to a qualified professional, and consider a non-profit credit counselling service if debt is the pressure point.

We do not publish figures we have not verified

We do not publish an interest rate, an annual percentage rate, a fee, a borrowing limit, a funding time, an eligibility threshold, or a provincial rule unless we have verified it against a primary source, meaning the regulator, the legislation, or the provider's own binding documentation. Secondary sources, competitor comparison pages and generative tools are not primary sources and are not accepted as one here. A number that is nearly right in this sector is not a rounding error, it is a person budgeting for the wrong repayment.

Verified provincial figures

Provincial rules for this province are being reviewed and will be published once verified against the provincial regulator. As things stand, The Payday publishes no verified provincial figures at all, and every province page on this site states that plainly rather than implying coverage it does not have. Payday lending in Canada is regulated by the provinces, with a federal criminal rate of interest in the background, so the applicable cap and the protections you get depend on where you live. Until we have confirmed those details province by province, we will describe how the framework works and tell you to check the specifics with your provincial consumer protection regulator.

What we will never publish

These are hard limits, not preferences. Content containing any of the following does not go live:

  • Invented testimonials, customer quotes or user reviews of any kind
  • Star ratings, scores or awards that we have not actually assessed
  • Statistics, survey results or market figures without a verifiable source
  • Lender names, licence numbers or comparison entries that have not been confirmed
  • Urgency or pressure language designed to push a reader toward borrowing
  • Any suggestion that a reader is irresponsible or at fault for needing money

Commercial relationships are disclosed and kept separate

The Payday is funded by affiliate commissions when partner arrangements exist, and that model is set out in full in our affiliate disclosure. Editorial decisions are made independently of it. Partners do not see copy before publication, cannot approve or reject it, cannot buy placement, and cannot have an accurate criticism removed. Where a link is compensated, it will be identified so you can weigh it. At present no partner arrangement is live, so nothing currently published is influenced by one even in appearance.

How a page is produced

  1. We define the question a reader is actually trying to answer, in their words rather than industry language
  2. We separate what can be explained structurally from what needs a verified figure
  3. We draft the explanatory content and route every factual claim through a source check
  4. Anything without a primary source is either cut or converted into a visible pending slot
  5. We review the page against this policy, our affiliate disclosure and our tone rules before publication
  6. We date the page and schedule it for review, since rules and products in this sector change

Dating, review and updates

Pages carry a publication date and, once revised, a review date, so you can judge how current the information is. Regulatory content is the most perishable material on the site, because provincial rules change and providers change their terms without notice, so those pages are the priority for re-review. If a page is materially out of date and we know it, our preference is to correct it or take it down rather than leave it standing because it earns traffic.

Corrections and how to report an error

If something here is wrong, we want to know, and we would rather hear it from you than leave it live. Please use the contact page and tell us which page you were reading and what you believe is incorrect, including the source you are relying on if you have one. We review reports of factual error as a priority over everything else in the queue. Where a correction is minor, such as wording or a typographical slip, we simply fix it. Where a correction changes the meaning of a factual claim, we fix it and note on the page that it was corrected, because quietly editing a claim after people have read it is not a correction, it is a cleanup.

Common questions

Why does this site not show rates or fees?

Because we have not verified any against a primary source yet. Publishing an approximate cost in this sector causes real harm, so we leave the slot empty and say why rather than guessing.

Who writes the content?

Content is produced and reviewed by The Payday's editorial team against this policy. Providers and commercial partners have no role in writing, reviewing or approving it.

How do I report a mistake?

Use the contact page and tell us the page, the claim you think is wrong, and your source if you have one. Reports of factual error are handled ahead of other correspondence.

Do you accept payment for a favourable review?

No. Compensation never affects editorial coverage, ranking or criticism. Our affiliate disclosure explains the funding model in full.
